The West Virginia Academy of Science was founded at West Virginia University on November 28, 1924. The new Academy of Science was a child of the West Virginia Scientific Society in whose membership the idea originated some months earlier by J.A. Eiseland who pointed out state academies of science are 'organically affiliated with the American Assoc. for the Advancement of Science and that such a plan for our state would give national status for the organization'. A committee was formed for the proposed organization. The purpose of the society was to 'bring about a closer affiliation among scientists of the State and to organize as a group to national recognition', as stated by Dr. G.R. Bancroft, then president of the University Scientific Society.
